What is a breastplate used for?

A breastplate prevents the saddle from slipping backward. This is particularly useful when jumping, riding cross-country, on inclines, or for horses whose conformation and shoulder movement make them prone to the saddle sliding back. However, it is not a substitute for a correctly fitted saddle.

For which horses is a breastplate particularly useful?

It is suitable for, among others, horses with pronounced shoulder movement, a round barrel, or a body shape that causes the saddle to slide backward or sideways more easily, even when correctly fitted. It can also provide additional stability during fast movements and jumps.

How should a breastplate be fitted correctly?

It should fit securely without restricting the chest, the base of the neck, or shoulder movement. As a general guide, there should be sufficient space between the neck strap and the neck, and between the chest and the center of the breastplate. The exact adjustment should always be tailored to the horse and the specific model.

Why are elastic inserts on a breastplate useful?

The elastic sections give way as the shoulder moves. This reduces rigid pulling across the chest area while the breastplate continues to stabilize the saddle.

When does the martingale attachment come into effect?

With a normal head carriage and soft rein contact, it should remain largely inactive. Only when the horse raises its head significantly does it change the angle of the reins and limit upward movement.
