What is the difference between a closed and an open martingale?

With a classic open martingale fork, the two straps with the rein rings run independently of each other. With a closed martingale, both sides are connected to one another. As a result, the straps cannot move as far apart, and the reins are guided more compactly. The fundamental sliding effect on the reins remains comparable.

For which horses can a closed martingale be useful?

It is suitable for all horses but can be particularly interesting for horses that raise their heads significantly in certain situations, thereby making it difficult to maintain an even contact with the reins. Due to the closed design, both sides also stay steadier together, which can be advantageous during fast movements and jumping.

When does the martingale actually start to take effect?

With normal head carriage, a correctly adjusted running martingale should remain largely ineffective. Only when your horse raises its head significantly does the angle of the reins change, and the effect is directed more downwards.

How long should a closed martingale be adjusted?

It must not be adjusted so short that it exerts pressure on the reins during normal head carriage. The length is adjusted so that your horse can maintain its natural head and neck movement and the martingale only engages when the head is raised significantly. The FN (German Equestrian Federation) also points out that a martingale fork must be adjusted to be sufficiently long.

Why are rein stops needed with a martingale?

The reins run through the martingale rings. Rein stops prevent these rings from sliding too far forward and getting caught on buckles or bit parts. They are therefore part of the safe use of a running martingale.
