Bell boots primarily protect the bulbs of the heel, the coronary band, and the rear area of the front hoof if the horse overreaches with a hind hoof. This can reduce injuries caused by overreaching while also helping to prevent the front horseshoes from being pulled off.

How do I know if my horse is prone to overreaching?

Typical signs include small injuries or sores on the bulbs of the heel, damage to the rear hoof area, or regularly lost or loose front shoes. Recurring problems should also be discussed with your farrier, as hoof balance and shoeing can also play a role.

How should bell boots fit correctly?

They should completely cover the bulb area and extend far enough down without hindering the horse when landing. At the same time, they must not fit too tightly at the top or cause constant chafing in the pastern area.

Can a bell boot prevent my horse from pulling off a horseshoe?

It can significantly reduce the risk by covering the rear area of the front hoof and the horseshoe. However, pulling off a shoe cannot be prevented entirely, as factors such as movement patterns, ground conditions, and shoeing all play a role.

Are bell boots allowed in competitions?
