swollen legs after longer periods of rest are often related to a lack of movement? Muscle activity and the movement of the limbs normally support the return transport of fluid from the tissue. If your horse stands for many hours, a part of this natural support is lost. That is exactly why stable bandages are often used overnight or during rest periods.

What are stable bandages used for?

Stable bandages are primarily used during longer periods of rest. They can provide additional support to the horse's leg and, through even pressure, help reduce swelling or "filled" legs.

What is the difference between stable bandages and exercise bandages?

Exercise bandages are intended for use while riding and are designed to protect and support the horse's leg during exertion. Stable bandages, on the other hand, are mainly used during rest phases, such as overnight or after strenuous activity, and can be particularly beneficial for horses prone to filled legs.

Why do horses' legs swell up overnight or during long periods of standing?

With little movement, the return transport of fluid from the lower limbs is less supported. As a result, fluid can collect in the tissue, making the legs appear swollen. Movement and regular turnout help to counteract such swelling.

Do I need bandage pads under stable bandages?

Yes. Stable bandages should be used with suitable bandage pads. The padding helps distribute pressure more evenly and protects the horse's leg from excessive pressure on specific areas. You can find suitable SUNRIDE bandage pads in our shop. Uneven pressure can damage tendons.

How tightly should stable bandages be applied?

They should be wrapped evenly, without wrinkles, and with constant tension. Bandages that are too loose can slip and cause pressure points, while bandages that are applied too tightly or unevenly can strain tendons and tissue.

When is leg swelling not simply due to a lack of movement?

If swelling is sudden, significantly one-sided, warm, or painful, or if there is additional lameness, you should not assume it is merely normal swelling. Swelling can have various causes and should be checked by a veterinarian in such cases.

How are stable bandages cleaned?

The bandages are machine washable. Close the Velcro fasteners before washing and it is best to use a laundry bag so they do not stick to other textiles.

• Check for damage, loose seams, tears, or excessive wear before each use.
• Do not continue to use the bandages if damaged or showing signs of material fatigue.
• Do not apply bandages too tightly to avoid circulation problems, pressure points, or chafing.
• Check the fit and positioning regularly.
• Use only on clean, dry horse skin.
• Allow to dry thoroughly after use and clean regularly to prevent mold or bacterial growth.
• Do not use chemical cleaning agents, bleach, or fabric softeners, as these may damage the material.
• Do not store or dry near open flames, heat sources, or chemical substances.
• Do not modify, shorten, or repair the product yourself.
